Shrine of the Blessed Virgin Mary

St. James Cathedral, Seattle, Washington (July 2014)

During our family trip to Oregon/Washington in 2014 we managed to spend a couple of days putzing around Seattle, mainly around the market area. Overall it was a great day and contributed to more than 400 photos. I had spent time trying to put together a photo bucket list before we went out there and an old church is something that I really wanted to photograph. Old churches, in general, have become something of a general bucket list item for me and I generally try and scope them out when I’m out and about.

Shooting on this day, in particular, did not go as I had planned. My allergies were acting up which, as those who know me know, are horrible. Even without drugs it was all I could do to stay awake. When we arrived there was a service in session and my family, as tired as they were from their day in Seattle, diligently gave me the time I needed to wait for the service to end. It was still a bit odd, however, because there were still a couple of stragglers worshipping and I was trying to be quiet in my camera-clicking. Thankfully, I was not the only photographer.

Off to the side was the Shrine, and it’s my favorite part of the church and my favorite photo out of the lot. Looking back now, I wish I would have spent more time getting different photos than just the end-of-the-room shot. I still like it…
